Janet "La Paloma" Meza - Dance/Baile
Originally from Houston, Texas, Janet Meza has studied Mexican and Spanish dance for over 30 years.
She began her dance career at the age of 15 when she was asked to join one of the leading Mexican Folklorico dance company’s in Houston. From there, under the instruction of Rafael Ventura, Janet studied and performed Folklorico and other cultural dances from Jalisco, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Yucatan, Oaxaca, Nayarit, Sinaloa and many other regions. She performed at The Miller Outdoor Theatre’s International Program every year during that time alongside Houston’s famous Mariachi Los Gallitos.
Upon attending a concert by Maria Benitez’s Spanish Dance Company several years later, Janet was captivated by the art of Flamenco, and decided to audition and join Gitanerias under the direction of Lucia Rodriguez and Valdemar Phoenix. In her early 20’s, she began to dedicate her life to the study and performance of Flamenco alongside some of Spain’s most influential artists, including Timo Lozano, Tibu La Tormenta, Antonio Granjero, Paco Del Puerto, Anya Vollart, Susanna di Palma, Mario Guerrero and many others.
Over the course of 30 years, Janet has performed at many notable locations such as The Wortham Center, Jones Hall, Miller Outdoor Theatre, The Hobby Center, The George R. Brown Convention Center, Rice University, The University of Houston, The University of St. Thomas, Sam Houston State University, and the Columbus Opera House. She has also performed at international festivals as well as many other cultural events. Today, Janet continues to pursue her studies by performing with Lucia and Valdemar in many venues in the Houston area.
